A tournament is where players gather to play specific types of poker. It is different to a ring game in the sense that there is no formal structure involved in the latter.

The Prizes

In a typical tournament, the player pays a buy-in rate. The amount is usually given in chips before the game starts. The commercial venue may also charge additional fees for the tournament or they may deduct the fee from the fixed buy-in rate. In poker tournaments, the chips have no real cash value. They only serve a notional significance to the tournament. Once the player has exhausted all his chips, he is considered out of the game.

The prizes are usually derived from the buy-in rates the player pays. Some outside funds may also be used to serve as pot prizes for the winners. Some poker tournaments – such as the invitational type – do not have buy in rates. They fund their prizes only from sponsorships or from gate spectators. These poker games are usually termed as freerolls.

The prizes are given in reverse chronological order. The 1st place goes to the last person in a poker game. This system eliminates the possibility of game ties since a single player alone must have all the necessary chips to end the tournament.
